Why You Should Always Get Track Tuition for Motorcycle Track Days

A Lesson From the Top

There is no substitute for experience, and when that experience comes from a World Superbike Champion, you listen. I was fortunate to receive one on one track tuition from none other than Neil Hodgson. The difference it made to my riding was not just noticeable, it was transformative. Whether you are new to track days or a seasoned rider, quality instruction will elevate your skills, boost your confidence, and improve your safety.

More Than Just Riding Fast

Track tuition is not about riding faster for the sake of it. It is about understanding the discipline and technique behind riding well. Hodgson covered all the essentials with a level of clarity that made complex ideas easy to apply on track. He broke down every stage of a lap, from approach to exit, into manageable, actionable steps.

Approach to Track Days

Before turning a wheel, Neil emphasized preparation. A clear head, a good night’s sleep, and a focused mindset are as important as any machine spec. Treating the day with respect sets the tone for safe, productive riding. Arriving with a structured plan and knowing what you want to work on prevents aimless laps and helps you progress meaningfully.

Track Position and Line

We broke down ideal track positioning in great detail. Entry, apex, and exit lines were all discussed with real on track examples. Consistent lines mean predictable behavior, which improves safety and lets you build speed gradually. Using all of the available track, even on warm up laps, builds confidence and flow.

Gear Selection

Knowing what gear to be in at what point makes a massive difference. Hodgson showed me how to pick gears that offer the right engine braking, throttle response, and acceleration zone control. Smooth downshifts and early upshifts maintain stability. Short shifting in certain corners helps calm the chassis and can even lead to better lap times.

Throttle Control

Arguably the most important aspect of smooth riding. Rolling on gently and progressively, rather than grabbing a handful, keeps the suspension balanced and the tires gripping. It changed how I exited corners entirely. Good throttle control can help save a corner gone wrong, while poor application unsettles the bike and risks traction.

Body and Foot Position

We examined how body position affects the bike’s balance. Chest low, head toward the mirror, and bum slightly off the seat inside the corner. Foot placement on the balls of the feet kept inputs light and controlled. I learned how minor adjustments made a big impact. Having your feet out of the way also improves ground clearance and lever control.

Vision on Track

Look where you want to go. A simple phrase, but crucial. By looking ahead, focusing on apexes and exits rather than the space in front of the front tire, my smoothness and cornering speed increased almost immediately. Target fixation is real. Learning to shift your vision early helps the rest of your body follow.

Braking Technique

We covered trail braking and how to release pressure as you tip in. Hodgson explained braking should never be abrupt. Instead, it should be part of the corner entry, gradually shifting weight forward and maintaining grip. Effective braking sets up the entire corner. Learning where and how long to brake made me smoother and faster.

Machine Condition

None of this matters if the bike is not in shape. We discussed checking brakes, tire condition, tire pressures, chain slack, and lever setup. A well prepped bike builds confidence and allows you to focus purely on riding. Hodgson stressed the importance of checking your machine before and after every session.

Why It Matters

The result of all this? More enjoyment, more speed, and more safety. I left the track faster, smoother, and more relaxed than ever before. I understood why things worked, not just that they did. That knowledge stays with me every time I ride. It gave me tools I could use both on and off the track, and it reduced the mental fatigue that often comes with trying to figure it all out alone.

Building Confidence and Craft

Track tuition is the best investment you can make as a rider. It shortens the learning curve and teaches you habits that will improve your road riding as well. Riding on track is one of the best experiences a motorcyclist can have. Doing it with the guidance of someone like Neil Hodgson takes it to another level. There is no better way to refine your technique, test your limits safely, and walk away with more control over your machine.

If you ride on track, do yourself a favor. Get the tuition. You will never regret it.
