Not every great motorcycle needs big power, race suspension, or aggressive styling. Sometimes the best bikes are the ones that simply show up, do the job, and keep going without complaint. That is exactly what our 2010 new old stock Yamaha TTR 125 small wheel has done since the day I bought it for my son in 2020.
What started as a simple beginner trail bike turned into one of the most reliable and enjoyable machines we have ever owned.

A New Bike From Another Time
Buying a new old stock bike always feels a bit special. This TTR 125 had been sitting untouched for years before we picked it up, essentially brand new despite being a 2010 model. It was simple, honest, and refreshingly free from unnecessary complexity.
From the first ride, it just worked. No drama, no quirks, no surprises. It fired up every time and got on with the job, exactly what you want when introducing a young rider to the world of off road riding.

Built for the Woods, Ready for Anything
The TTR quickly proved itself in the environment it was designed for. In the woods, it felt perfectly at home. Light, manageable, and easy to control, it allowed my son to build confidence without being intimidated.
But what surprised me most was just how capable it was beyond its intended use. This was not a bike that stayed within its limits. It climbed steep hills with determination, finding traction where you would not expect it. It handled small jumps without fuss and even made its way around a full motocross track.
More Capable Than It Has Any Right to Be
Taking a small trail bike onto a motocross track sounds like a mismatch, and in many ways it is. The suspension is basic, the power is modest, and it lacks the sharp edge of a proper motocross machine.
Yet ridden with an understanding of what the bike is, the TTR handled everything thrown at it. It tackled hard packed whoops, soaked up rough sections as best it could, and kept moving forward with a kind of stubborn determination.
It may not have been fast, but it was effective. And more importantly, it was fun and confidence inspiring.
Simple Engineering That Just Works
Part of the TTR’s charm lies in its simplicity. The air cooled engine is dependable and forgiving. Maintenance is straightforward, and there are very few things to go wrong. That simplicity translates into reliability, and in our case, the bike has never faltered.
It became a machine we could rely on completely. No unexpected breakdowns, no frustrating issues. Just turn the key, start it up, and ride.
Growing Up Through Motorcycles
For my son, the TTR 125 was more than just a bike. It was a starting point. It carried him through his early teenage years, teaching him the fundamentals of off road riding. Balance, throttle control, and confidence all developed on this small, capable machine.
Eventually, he outgrew it. The move to a Yamaha YZ125 and later a Yamaha YZ250 brought more power, sharper performance, and a completely different level of riding.
But none of that would have been possible without the foundation the TTR provided.
The Virtue of a Small Trail Bike
What the TTR 125 proves is that you do not need a high performance machine to have a meaningful riding experience. A small trail bike can do almost everything if you approach it the right way.
It encourages skill development rather than reliance on power. It builds confidence rather than intimidation. And it delivers fun in a way that feels accessible and honest.
A Bike That Earned Its Place
Looking back, the Yamaha TTR 125 may not be the most exciting bike on paper, but it is one of the most rewarding we have owned. It never tried to be something it was not. It simply delivered exactly what was needed, every single time.
In a world full of high performance machines, there is something refreshing about a bike that just works. And for us, this little Yamaha proved that sometimes the simplest machines leave the biggest impression.
