A Personal Affection

I have personal and deep love of the Alfa Romeo Spider having been loaned a 1972 Kamm tailed example by a friend while in Australia.  I wasn’t really aware how remarkable the little Spider roadster was, until I got behind the wood rimed wheel and in full command of its twin cam zesty motor.  It was love at first drive.

Driving through the Melbourne suburbs during the springtime enjoying the top down and distinctive note of the 4 cylinder twin cam jewel of a motor made me feel alive in a way I had not quite experienced, other then behind the wheel of my classic 911.  It was a different proposition altogether.

The outright performance of the little Spider was nothing to write home about, however it was the combination of all the parts of this car that made it engaging beyond the facts and figures.  The steering, the balance, the gearbox, the finicky second gear syncro, the induction from the side draught carburettors, the rear wheel drive configuration and that making that motor sing while rowing through the little gearbox.  A car that is greater then the sum of its components.
