Finding the Perfect First Bike: How a New Yamaha TTR LE Led Us to IoM Legend Clive Padgett

Finding a suitable first geared motorcycle for my son was a task I took seriously. I wanted something robust, reliable, and easy to manage, something that would inspire confidence and build skills without being intimidating. After searching high and low for a decent used bike, we kept coming across machines that were either tired, overpriced, or simply not right. The Yamaha TTR series, though no longer in production, kept coming up in conversations as one of the most beloved small enduro and field bikes. It was known for being bulletproof, with simple, solid mechanics, and ideal for younger or beginner riders.

What Makes the Yamaha TTR 125 Special

The Yamaha TTR 125 LE is renowned in off road circles for its toughness and user friendly nature. With a four stroke engine, electric start, and a lightweight frame, it is easy to see why so many riders started their journey on one of these bikes. The TTR 125 LE was built to take the knocks of trail riding and field use, yet it was refined enough to teach the fundamentals of clutch and throttle control. Its simplicity was its strength, with easy maintenance and dependable performance that made it a firm favorite among riders and parents alike. The suspension setup, while basic, soaked up rough terrain with ease, and the bike’s manageable seat height made it accessible to a wide range of young riders.

An Unexpected Find

After weeks of frustration, I stumbled upon something almost too good to be true. A brand new, old stock Yamaha TTR LE, still in the crate, and it was at none other than Padgett’s Motorcycles in Dewsbury. The dealership owned by Clive Padgett, a name synonymous with motorcycle racing and especially the Isle of Man TT. It felt like a sign. Here was the bike I had been hunting for, in perfect condition, from a place steeped in motorcycling history. It was rare enough to find one used, let alone brand new, and the fact that it was still in its original packaging only added to the excitement.

Meeting Clive Padgett Again

Returning to Padgett’s Motorcycles, I was welcomed once again by Clive Padgett himself. His enthusiasm had not dimmed even though he is immersed in the world of motorcycles.   I explained the significance of buying my son’s first real geared motorcycle, he understood completely. Clive knows what motorcycling means to people. He has lived it, breathed it, and helped shape it.

Clive took the time to talk us through the bike, its features, and its heritage. He shared his own stories about young riders starting out, the importance of getting the right first bike, and how these early experiences can shape a rider’s future. He did not just sell us a motorcycle, he celebrated the moment with us, understanding that this was more than a transaction, it was the beginning of my son’s motorcycling journey. He even shared a few tips about maintaining the bike and ensuring it would serve us well for years.

After we had agreed to buy the bike Clive mentioned he has just sold the last batch of 8 Yamaha TTR 125’s to Valentino Rossi’s ranch in Italy as training bikes!  Wow!  Yamaha UK was contacted my Yamaha in Italy and also Yamaha Japan to enquire (on behalf of Valentino Rossi’s VR46 training academy) if he had any of the legendary TTR 125’s left as in their records Padgets had taken the largest order before production ceased.  Yes indeed Clive had kept 10 bikes still in their Yamaha crates.  An expanding stock room meant they had to be sold to make room for new Yamaha models.   8 bikes were sold to VR46 in Italy and the 9th was our bike, with 1 solitary bike remaining in Padget’s inventory.

My Son’s Joyful Moment

My then 10 year old son was absolutely blown away. He could hardly believe that he was getting his first real geared bike, and that it was a Yamaha, his favorite manufacturer. The fact that it was blue, again in his favorite Yamaha color, made it even better. His eyes lit up when he saw the bike in person, and he could not stop smiling. For him, this was more than just a new toy; it was a symbol of growing up, of entering a world he had only watched from the sidelines. Seeing his excitement and pride made all the effort to find the perfect bike completely worthwhile.

He immediately began imagining where he would ride, the trails he would explore, and the new skills he would develop. It was clear that this bike was more than just metal and rubber; it was a gateway to adventure, freedom, and confidence. We spent the rest of the day discussing plans for future rides, safety gear, and setting up a routine for maintenance and care. His excitement was infectious, and I could not help but feel proud that we had made this happen together.

The Padgett Legacy

For those unfamiliar, Clive Padgett is a central figure in British motorcycle racing. His family dealership, founded by his father Peter, has become one of the most respected names in the sport. Padgett’s Motorcycles has a long and successful history at the Isle of Man TT, with riders like Ian Hutchinson achieving legendary status under their banner. Clive’s passion for racing and for motorcycling in general is infectious, and his dealership reflects that same dedication and love for the sport.

Clive has always been about more than just business. His involvement in racing and commitment to helping riders, both professional and amateur, has made him a beloved figure in the community. His ability to connect with enthusiasts at all levels, from seasoned racers to young beginners like my son, speaks volumes about his character and the values of the Padgett family.

A Perfect Start

Walking away with the Yamaha TTR LE, I felt a deep satisfaction. Not just because we had found the perfect bike, but because we had shared the experience with someone who truly appreciated what it meant. My son was thrilled, and I knew that this bike would be the foundation of many great memories to come. Clive Padgett’s involvement made it all the more special, turning what could have been a simple purchase into an unforgettable moment in our motorcycling story.

As we loaded the bike into the van, my son could not stop talking about when we would get out for the first ride. He was already asking about different places to explore and how soon we could get his gear ready. The sense of anticipation and joy was something I will never forget. This was more than just buying a motorcycle, it was about building a bond, creating shared experiences, and setting the stage for a lifelong passion. And for that, I am grateful to Clive Padgett and the remarkable journey that led us to that special day.
