Behind the Scenes with a TT Icon: Meeting Clive Padgett

One ordinary trip to collect my son’s bike turned into an unforgettable day when we met Clive Padgett, the legendary Isle of Man TT race team owner and manager. We were in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, expecting a quick stop at Padgett’s Motorcycles, but what we found was something far more special. As we stepped inside the dealership, we were greeted by the ever enthusiastic Clive Padgett himself, who took time out of his busy day to show us around and share his passion for racing.

The Padgett Legacy

Padgett’s Motorcycles is more than just a multi franchise dealership. It is a cornerstone of British motorcycle racing, steeped in history and passion. Founded by Clive’s father, Peter Padgett, the family business has grown into one of the most respected names in both road racing and retail. The Padgett family has long been associated with Honda, and while the dealership offers various brands, the love for Honda motorcycles is clear in every corner of the showroom. Their commitment to excellence has earned them a reputation that stretches far beyond Dewsbury.

A Rich Isle of Man TT History

Padgett’s racing history at the Isle of Man TT is nothing short of legendary. The team has been a consistent presence at the TT for decades, fielding some of the most talented riders in the sport. Their dedication to the grueling road races has seen them achieve incredible success, with multiple podiums and victories across various classes. The Padgett name has become synonymous with precision, preparation, and passion for the TT. They are not just participants; they are part of the fabric of the event, known for their ability to push the limits and bring out the best in their riders and machines.

Inside the Showroom

Clive led us through the impressive showroom, filled with gleaming machines from multiple manufacturers. Yet, it was the Honda display that truly stood out. As a family deeply connected with Honda’s racing heritage, Clive spoke warmly about the brand’s history with Padgett’s, recalling countless races, wins, and memories. The attention to detail in the showroom reflected the same meticulous care that the team puts into their race preparations.

The Historic Five Wins at the TT

The highlight of our visit came when Clive invited us to see the as raced display of their championship winning bikes. Among them were the machines ridden by Ian Hutchinson, who made history by winning all five major races at the Isle of Man TT in a single week in 2010. This unprecedented achievement included victories in the Superbike, Superstock, both Supersport races, and the Senior TT. Seeing these bikes up close, complete with race wear and the aura of their achievements, was a moment that left us in awe. Clive shared stories of those victories, the challenges they faced, and the triumphs that followed. It was a rare and personal insight into one of the most remarkable feats in road racing history. The dedication of the entire Padgett team during that TT week was extraordinary, showcasing their ability to deliver under immense pressure.

A Generous Spirit

What struck me most about Clive Padgett was not just his knowledge or his status in the racing world, but his genuine kindness and enthusiasm. He treated us, two ordinary visitors, as if we were long time friends. He gave us time, attention, and a glimpse into a world that many only dream of. I was blown away by his hospitality and the warmth with which he welcomed us.

A Day to Remember

Meeting Clive Padgett turned an ordinary errand into an extraordinary experience. It reminded me why I love the world of motorcycles and racing. It is not just about speed and machines, but about the people who make it all possible. Clive’s passion, generosity, and dedication left a lasting impression, and our visit to Dewsbury became a cherished memory that we will talk about for years to come. The Padgett team’s history, their victories, and the spirit of racing they embody made the day unforgettable.
